Age Ain't Nothing But A Number !

It’s one of those things that cross your mind after years and years of growing up. It’s that phrase that you know is true to a certain extent, because let’s face it, we are all not getting any younger. It’s something that falls out of everyone’s mouths on a constant basis and because we hear it so much, we start to believe. The phrase I’m talking about that is said by people that are just reaching their mid-twenties or about hitting their 30’s is one that will forever graze your mind, “I feel SO OLD, what am I doing with myself?”

Yup! It’s a true fact, every second of everyday, we get older. The moments we reminisce about “ the good old days” where bills were non-existent and the only thing that is on your mind is how you are going to convince your parents for the coolest thing on the Toy’s R Us catalogue that comes along with the weekend flyers. The true fact of growing up is inevitable, and while we ponder the fact of those days where responsibility was at its minimum, we forget to embrace the adulthood and all its glory.

I’ve probably mentioned to many friends how I dread my birthday every year since age twenty-three. At that time, you are older than 19, you’ve matured quite a bit but not enough to feel content with things that have been going on in your life. This is a peak point where now most are graduating from University, finishing up school, have taken a higher paying position or satisfied with what they are doing in life but still in search for better things to come. As you reach 25, its official, you’ve hit your mid-twenties, whether you like to accept it or not. This I feel is when we start to panic (well I did kind of at least) and start thinking long term; how do I want to invest money? WTF are RRSP’s? What do I want to do in the next couple years? Why is it every time I reach for my mail that I get letters saying “ Sir/Miss: you owe us this amount of money by this date. Cool thanks!” and never a letter saying, “You’re awesome! Have a dope day!”

With great age comes great responsibilities; this is a time in our lives where we start saving for the future, making decisions that will impact our lives for the next 10, 20 years. Its scary as hell, there’s lots of adult jargon that everyone hears about, nods their heads and smile like we know what everyone is talking about. This is a time where people start thinking family; get engaged, pop babies, etc… Long term!

School , work, whatever it is that you do, it's a cycle, and as you get older, its becomes routine: wake up, go to work/school, come home from work/school, play video games, sleep, repeat - sounds vicous doesnt it? So how does one go about making things happen, finally sitting down with your financial advisor and telling them how much debt your in, how you want to save, how you want to invest? Make a list of goals! Now now, before you give me the stank eye and tell me how retarded that sounds, hear me out;

Making a list of goals is a great way for you to visualize what you want, its like doing homework: watching an hour video on the cycle of how bread molds is one thing, but when you put pen to paper, it's a way for your brain to interpret something and it sticks in your head much longer. This list should consist of long term goals and short term goals. Long term goal example can range from finishing school, saving up for a car/down paymnet to your dream condo or simply moving out from one city to another. Its very important to sent simple/short-term goals as well, just in the fact that you know these long term goals will take a little bit longer than you like, you need to set these small ones just to 1) get things done 2) keep busy while achieving the long term ones 3) feel accomplished in little simple goals in life. it can be as simple as adding " need to pick up toothbrush from shoppers drug mart". You feel me?

Take 5 mins of your time and write these all down, post it somewhere where you know that you will see it everyday, bathroom mirror, work space, the sun visor of your car, etc. . . This is to remind you not of how many goals you havent tackled, but its to tell you that during your day, if at anytime you can do it, then do so! After every time you finish a task, simply check it off. Over time, because you've been so busy with work, special commitments and getting drunk, you will notice that from the day you started  this list, you have already accomplished a few and as time passes, you'll realize that your list is almost complete. Its a sure fire way to make you feel proud of youself and have that warm cozy feeling. Heck, you should feel proud of yourself! Never put a timeline on this list, for there are unexpected factors that happen in life and can postpone you from completing your goal list, but never stoping you. Remember, everyone is unique and different, this means everyone will accomplish these goals at different times. Its not a race, its a reminder!

Not to worry, there are many of us ( myself included) that feel far behind and from our list of goals and dreams, have only accomplished a few, there is still decades of your life left to do it. Balance hard work with play, plow through your work and do it to the best of your ability and reward yourself, you’ve earned it!
Regardless of  any factor, you're getting older and there's not a damn thing you can do about it- so just humor yourself and remember, Yes... you are old, things happen because they do, and yes, you can be anything you want. Doesnt matter the age, its if you want it enough to make it happen.

And if for any reason your old ass feels like you cant do it… as Drizzy Drake said:

“I never threw away that paper with my Grammy speech, because I haven't hit the pinnacles I plan to reach…”

Woo 1 more hour of work and its my weekend!

Enjoy yours :)

Oza xoxo
